Yesterday I birded the lakefront from Fairport Harbor to Lorain. Basically
I birded at Fairport Harbor, East 72nd, Avon Lake Power Plant and Lorain
Harbor. I also stopped by Sandy Ridge.. The various lakefront sites were
pretty similar with few ducks or gulls. I really saw nothing of note at any
of these locations. East 72nd, Avon Lake and Lorain all had quite a bit of
ice that had blown in over night so open water was limited. Fairport was
open but had very few birds. I did not see a single great black-backed gull
at any of these locations. It's interesting that at all of the lakefront
areas combined I probably saw less than 200 ducks total. At my house I saw
over 3,000 red-breasted mergansers alone.
Sandy Ridge was a little better. There I had a couple tree swallow,
red-headed woodpecker, and sandhill crane. Like the lakefront locations,
waterfowl numbers were low.
