Visited Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area today with Matt Carity and Heather
Chute. We had a great day, meeting our owl quota.
In the cedar by the owl pines we saw a Long-eared Owl, flushed a second, and
flushed a Short-eared Owl that had also been roosting in the cedar. That
was a first for me. Later we found 2 more Long-eared Owls in the pine
grove.
We saw several (4ish) Rough-legged Hawks, a few Northern Harriers, plenty of
Bald Eagles, and a GOLDEN EAGLE in juvenile plumage. We got great looks at
it perched fairly near the road and then flying.
No Northern Shrike at the reported Delaware Wildlife Area location, but a
great day nonetheless.
Good birding,
John
