This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for April 13, 2007.
Compiler: Paul Gardner. Email: [log in to unmask]

This is a summary of noteworthy birds reported from Ohio in
the previous week or so. Reports have been gleaned by the
compiler from various internet sources, particularly Ohio-
Birds, The Ohio Birding Forum, the RareBird.org forums,
Cincinnati Bird Sightings Log, Southwestern Ohio (Dayton) Rare
Bird Alert, and from some individual observers who kindly
share their knowledge. Questions, comments, complaints and
additional noteworthy sightings not posted to one of the above
may be sent to the compiler.

Review List Species. (Review list species are sufficiently
rare that details of any sighting can help increase our
understanding of Ohio's bird life. Suggestions and guidelines
for submitting documentation of review list birds can be found
at the OOS website (www.ohiobirds.org).

ROSS'S GOOSE: Apparently discovered in Amish country last
week, the bird was reported on the 10th and was still being
seen on the 11th. Bruce Glick provides directions: DeLorme,
page 51, D-4 (bottom of the page). From Millersburg, (Holmes
County), take Rts 62/39 east toward Berlin. Before getting to
Berlin, turn right (south) on Rt 557 towards the town of
Charm. After several miles and just before the Guggisberg
Cheese House and restaurant, the bird was with Canada Geese
near a small pond on the right side of the road.

SPOTTED TOWHEE: Last reported on Wednesday April 11, at the
feeder of Ms. Jan Dixon, 1948 Whitby Court, Holland, Lucas
County.

HARRIS'S SPARROW: Sue Snyder reports the recent cold weather
has brought the bird back to the feeders at the home of Mr.
Eli D. Miller, 3395 Township Rd. 406, Walnut Creek, Holmes Co.

Seasonal Highlights: A return to wintry conditions seems to
have arrested migration. GREATER SCAUP, LESSER BLACK-BACKED
GULLS, ICELAND GULLS and GLAUCOUS GULLS linger along the lake.

EURASIAN WIGEON: John Pogacnik found one on the 8th at Ottawa
National Wildlife Refuge in the impoundment directly west of
the parking lot.

SURF SCOTER: Nancy Anderson had them at Sims Park, Euclid on
the 7th. Paula Lozano found nine surf and many unidentifiable
scoters on the 12th at the Rocky River lakefront, Cuyahoga Co.

RED-NECKED GREBE: Ray Hannikman found a winter-plumaged bird
at Headlands Beach State Park on the 7th.

AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN: A bird lingering since March 28th at
Delaware Wildlife Area along Panhandle Rd and Leonardsburg Rd
was observed on the 11th by Jack Stenger.

LITTLE BLUE HERON: Frank Frick refound the Spring Valley
Wildlife Area bird on the 6th. The same bird rewarded John
Habig on the 10th.

BROAD-WINGED HAWK: David Brinkman reported a fly-over in
Hamilton County on the 10th.

MERLIN: Rick Nirschl saw one snag a blackbird at the Airport
Hwy entrance ramp to I-475 in Lucas County on the 8th. Bob
Royse had one along Radcliffe Rd in Pickaway Co. on the 10th.

VIRGINIA RAIL: John Habig had two at Spring Valley Wildlife
Area on the 10th.

SORA: Heard by John Habig at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on
the 10th. John Kuenzli flushed one at Delaware Wildlife Area on
the 12th.

SANDHILL CRANE: Heard by John Habig at Spring Valley Wildlife
Area on the 10th.

SOLITARY SANDPIPER: Su Snyder observed one on the 7th at
Shreve Fish Pond across from Wright Marsh Parking Lot on Rt.
226 at the Killbuck Marsh Wildlife Area.

FRANKLIN'S GULL: Tom Rooney was "fairly certain" of ID'ing
these at Spring Valley Wildlife Area on the 6th

COMMON TERN: Reported in surprising numbers from Nemisilia
Reservoir, Summit Co. on the 7th.

FORSTER'S TERN: Kenn Kaufman saw two adult birds on the 12th at
the south edge of Oak Harbor, where Highway 19 crosses the
Portage River. On the same day, Michigan birder Darlene
Friedman saw two at Metzger Marsh.

CHIMNEY SWIFT: Brian Wulker reported one from Union Terminal,
Cincinnati on the 7th.

BLUE-HEADED VIREO: Rob Lowry reported one from Highbanks Metro
Park, Delaware Co., on the 7th. Bob Royce found them on the
10th at Shawnee State Forest.

NORTHERN PARULA: Albert Scruggs had one at Miami Whitewater
Forest on the 6th. David Hess reported on from West Junction
Rd. in Southwestern Vinton County near the Jackson C. line

PALM WARBLER: Gerry Brevoort reported one from Blendon Woods
Metro Park, Columbus, on the 11th.

GRASSHOPPER SPARROW: Bob Royse found one between Charlie's
Pond and the Pickaway County Airport on the 10th.

ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK: On the 10th Mark Wessel reported this
extraordinary yard bird from Camargo Rd., Madeira.

WESTERN MEADOWLARK: Tallied on Becky Cullen's and Greg Link's
record-setting March Big Day, the bird at Range Line and
Cygnet Roads in Wood County.was last reported on March 31.
Since the species tends to linger, it is worth checking for
(Delorme p. 36 B/C 2.5).

BREWER'S BLACKBIRD: On the 8th John Pogacnik saw two in Ottawa
Co. in a field on Reiman Road about a half mile north of Rte
579.

Trail in Winton Woods on the 11th.
