This is the Ohio Rare Bird Report for September 21, 2007.

ANHINGA: Paul Rodewald observed a fly-by exploiting thermals from a 
steel mill in Warren, Trumbull county, on the 15th.

MISSISSIPPI KITE: Ben Snow reported seeing a juvenile and adult bird 
flying over Swan Township in northern Vinton County on the 19th. 
That would be about 10 miles or so south from the Logan-area golf 
course that produced Ohio's first breeding record of this species.

Golden Eagle: Sandra Gaunt reported a first year bird flying west of 
Columbus on the 16th.

American Avocet: John Pogacnik reported on the 16th that he found 
one on the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge driving tour.

Hudsonian Godwit: Kent Miller passed along word that two were seen 
from the Cedar Point Causeway, Erie County, on the 19th.

Red Knot: Just like the above: Kent Miller passed along word that 
two were seen from the Cedar Point Causeway, Erie County, on the 
19th.

Western Sandpiper: Charlie Bombaci reported them from Hoover 
Reservoir, Delaware County, on the 17th. Aaron Boone had seen one 
there on the 13th.

Baird's Sandpiper: Richard Counts found three at Findlay Reservoir 
No. 1, Hancock County, on the 16th. Troy Shively found a single 
specimen amid a mixed flock of shorebirds at Indian Lake, Logan 
County, on the 20th.

Buff-breasted Sandpiper: Ben Warner reported a flock of them at 
Hoover Reservoir, Delaware County, on the 14th. Aaron Boone saw one 
there the next day. Charlie Bombaci reported them from there on the 
17th. Richard Counts found four at Findlay Reservoir No. 1, Hancock 
County, on the 16th, but Michigan birder Karl Overman found only one 
remaining on the 18th. 

Red-necked Phalarope: Nancy Anderson found one at the Cedar Point 
Causeway, Erie County, on the 16th. Su Synder and Winnie Sarno found 
two there the next day. On the 19th there were five, according to a 
report passed along by Kent Miller.

Laughing Gull: John Pogacnik spotted an adult at Ottawa National 
Wildlife Refuge on the 16th. Robert Lane photographed a second-
winter adult at Conneaut, Ashtabula County, on the 17th.  Troy 
Shively saw a juvenile at Indian Lake, Logan County, on the 20th.

Franklin's Gull: Troy Shively saw a juvenile at Indian Lake, Logan 
County, on the 20th, making a nice study with the preceding bird, 
one would imagine. Photo is at Rarebird.org.

Little Gull: Ray Hannikman spotted an adult bird and a first-year 
bird at Headlands Beach State Park on the morning of the 20th.

Sabine's Gull: Perhaps Ohio's most sought-after nonreview species. 
Ray Hannikman saw a juvenile flying over the lake at Headlands Beach 
State Park on the morning of the 20th.

Black Tern: Although not in the league of the preceding, three black 
terns were a good find for Ray Hannikman at Headlands Beach State 
Park on the 20th. John Pogacnik saw one at Ottawa National Wildlife 
Refuge on the 16th.

WHITE-WINGED DOVE: John Pogacnik reported one from the Vehler Road 
area of the driving tour route at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge on 
the 15th. He could not relocate the bird the next day.

Olive-sided Flycatcher: Charlie Bombaci reported one from Hoover 
Meadows, Delaware County, on the 15th and another from Hoover 
Reservoir, Delaware County, on the 17th.  

Yellow-bellied Flycatcher: Lori Brumbaugh had one in the backyard of
her Cincinnati home on the 19th.

Golden-winged Warbler: Charlie Bombaci found one at Hoover Meadows, 
Delaware County, on the 15th. On the 19th, Gene Stauffer spotted one 
at Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park in Franklin County.

Connecticut Warbler: Philip Chaon observed one well at Headlands 
Beach State Park on the 14th.

Yellow-headed Blackbird: Seen on the driving tour of Ottawa National 
Wildlife Refuge according to John Pogacnik on the 16th.
