Greetings---well, the peak passage of most of our shorebird species is indeed over. But there will still be many shorebirds coming through Ohio until the end of October. In fact, the best time to see certain species is still yet to come. Usually this list includes: Black-bellied Plover, Am. Golden-Plover, Greater Yellowlegs, Hudsonian Godwit, Western Sandpiper, White-rumped Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher, W. Snipe, and Red Phalarope. Dunlins haven't even arrived yet, and won't peak until late Oct-early Nov. Purple Sandpipers aren't expected before Nov. Because shorebird numbers and variety will generally be lower from now on, I find it easier to pick out species such as Western Sandpiper. Pretty soon, any dowitcher found is much more likely to be a Long-billed. Also, the possibility (albeit quite small) of finding a juv. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper is better from October on. So don't give up on the shorebirds yet--keep your eyes open while seeking
waterfowl & allies, gulls, etc. at wetlands and shores. And certain passerines (pipits, longspurs, snow buntings, horned larks e.g.) will also show up at places like Conneaut and Headlands Beach SP. Good birding, Craig
