Thanks to all that offered help confirming the hawk that was not (of
course!) a Snail Kite on Hayes Road in Amish country.
My 24-year-old son & I went back 10 days later. As I was pointing to
the very tree the bird sat on to my right, on my left was a very similar
bird on the telephone wire.
We shot pics, enhanced them for id purposes and could see that it
was a rough-legged hawk.
I learned that the rough-legged has a sharply downward curved bill
as does the Snail Kite.
I believe it was that brilliant sun that day shining right into that
bird making me see (or want to see) a red eye, red bill and red legs.
We continued to chase this other hawk Friday about 2:15 pm. We
traveled down a long Amish driveway, then lost it, then turned around
fast and found a gas well gravel road that headed toward the wood it
flew toward. We spotted a red-tail off in the woods and he shot that as
it was hunting.
My son said, ``Man, Mom, this is exciting. Its like we're Scully &
Mulder chasing aliens."
I said, ``Son, this is the excitement of bird-watching!"
