The past four days have been great fun. I saw a lot of new interesting
things. I participated in the GBBC by surveying all the common areas in
my apartment complex (between Lazelle Rd, and Polaris Pkwy.) and Lazelle
Woods Park.
At my apartment complex I observed 20 species including 5 Northen
Cardinals, 20 Mourning Doves, 47 European Starlings, 32 Goldfinches, 5 Red-
Tailed Hawks, 1 Cooper's Hawk, 1 Sharp-Shinned Hawk, 3 Blue Jays, 30 House
Sparrows, 7 House Finches, 1 Purple Finch, 32 Canada Geese, 6 American
Crows, 1 Great Blue Heron*, 36 Mallards, 4 Redheads, 2 American Robins, 12
Dark Eyed-Juncos, 2 Northern Mockingbirds, and 2 American Kestrels.
Most of these birds were just flying over but some of them including the
hawks, geese, mallards, and kestrels breed here. Two of the Red-Tailed
Hawks were displaying courtship behavior. The male Kestrel mounted the
female right before my eyes. I reported both of these species to the
Breeding Bird Atlas.
On Sunday I could have sworn I heard some killdeer but it just seemed too
unlikely for this time of February. Then that evening I read on this list
serve where Jim McCormac had seen some flying over at Killdeer Plains so
maybe I did hear them.
In Lazelle Woods Park I observed 26 species including 2 Purple Finches, 6
Blue Jays, 53 House Sparrows, 14 Mourning Doves, 4 White-Breasted
Nuthatches, 4 Tufted Titmice, 6 Carolina Chickadees, 15 Dark-Eyed Juncos,
8 Northern Cardinals, 16 House Finches, 9 American Crows, 1 Eastern
Bluebird, 3 Downy Wodpeckers, 3 Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, 1 Hairy
Woodpecker, 3 Mallards, 1 Coper's Hawk, 1 Turkey Vulture, 2 Song Sparrows,
1 Red-Breasted Nuthatch, 17 Goldfinches, 28 American Robins, 14 Canada
Geese, 32 European Starlings, 1 Common Grackle,and 1 Golden-Crowned
Kinglet.
Two of the Red-Bellied Woodpeckers were visiting a probable nesting cavity.
