Maybe that should read "Lack of Belted Kingfishers." Today began the safe
dates for the belted kingfisher so I stopped by Antrim Park on the way
home from work and walked down the path to the Olentangy River to look for
some. Not one was to be seen even though I saw three of them yesterday.
The same can be said for grackles which were also absent.
I did see the following though.
Canada Geese (one was on a nest)
numerous Mallards (mostly males)
4 Buffleheads (only males)
1 American Coot
1 Wood Duck (male)
3 Turkey Vultures
5 Northern Flickers (two of them were visting probable nesting sites)
2 Downy Woodpeckers (both females)
1 Hairy Woodpecker (female)
3 Red-Bellied Woodpeckers (only males)
1 Great Blue Heron
numerous Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, Northern Cardinals, and Red-
Winged Blackbirds
2 Starlings (visiting a probable nesting site)
I heard the Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker again (one of these days I'll see it)
