This is the Ohio Statewide Rare Bird Report for April 18, 2008.

SPECIES IN ALL CAPITAL LETTERS ARE REVIEW-LIST SPECIES. Details of
these sightings are desired by The Ohio Bird Records Committee. Careful
observation, not ornithological expertise, is the only qualification
for submitting your data. For details and pointers see:

Eurasian Teal: Joe Wojnarowski spotted a drake of this subspecies (Anas
crecca crecca) of Green-winged Teal at Station Road in Cuyahoga Valley
National Park on the 13th. It was still being seen on the 17th. Ben
Winger provided these directions: "Park at the Station Road Bridge
south of rte. 82 (Chippewa Road), and walk south along the railroad
tracks for ~400 yards until a swampy area of open water and dead snags
along the west (right) side of the tracks." While this bird is not
"countable" under ABA listing guidelines since the AOU does not
recognize it as a distinct species, some authorities (e.g. Clements
(2000) Birds of the World: A Checklist.) do. Listers may want to see
the bird to put it "in escrow" in anticipation of a future split.

Harlequin Duck: Suzanne Wagner reported that four were seen off
Headland's Beach, Cuyahoga County, on the 10th. John Pogacnik saw a
female offshore from his North Perry, Lake County, home on the 12th.

Eared Grebe: Su Synder reported that Alan Troyer on the 15th found two,
including a breeding plumage adult, at Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area,
Wayne County, along SR 95, about half way between Funk Road and South
Elyria Road. One was relocated the next day.

Little Blue Heron: Curt Dusthimer found at adult in the east
impoundment area of Hebron Fish Hatchery, Licking County, on the 15th.
The bird could not be relocated on the 16th. No reports since.

Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler: Ray Hannikman found a bird of this distinctive

western subspecies (Dendroica coronata auduboni) of yellow-rumped
warbler at Veteran's Park in Mentor, Lake County, on the 13th. It was
last reported on the 16th. This is a very rare visitor to Ohio.

Le Conte's Sparrow: Suzanne Wagner reported a rare spring migrant at
Mentor Marsh, Lake County, on the 11th.

Yellow-headed Blackbird: Carol Cartaino passed along word via Jim Moore
that one visited her home a couple of miles southwest of Belfast on the
Highland/Adams County line on the 13th. Last year in late April, Jim
had one at his feeders only a few miles away.

Common Redpoll: John Pogacnik reported on the 12th that he still had a
about a dozen at the feeders at his North Perry, Lake County, home.
