I went to Lazelle Woods at 7:00 this morning trying to get breeding
confirmation for the red-bellied woodpecker. For a while I was afraid
that the cavity I was watching was a dummy cavity since it is in full view
of an active Cooper's hawk nest but then on recent mornings I have seen
the male stick his head out of the cavity and call for the female. This
morning I watched that cavity for over an hour and I finally saw what I
wanted to see: the female and the male trading shifts.
If that had been the only thing I saw, it would have been fine with me
since that is what I set out to see but I also saw both Cooper's hawks
(how long after nest building until they start nesting?) song sparrows,
northern cardinals, American robins, white-breasted nuthatches, and a
killdeer.
