A morning walk around the Kendall Lake environs in the CVNP revealed 36
species, with 4 warbler species.

Notables were the first Orchard Oriole and the first Rose-breasted
Grosbeak of the season for me in the Valley, 2 Pine Warblers, a single
Blue-headed Vireo, many Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, a single
Louisiana Waterthrush, a single Brown Thrasher, and a Barred Owl.

I also watched a pair of Red-bellied Woodpeckers defend its nest cavity
from a pair of European Starlings trying to usurp it. Although the
native birds were triumphant this day, I was struck by the amount of
valuable energy they expended in defense.
