I headed down to Shawnee State Forest today. The vegetation wasn't very advanced, even for the date, but the expected species in the expected numbers could be found with no surprises. Here are some of the birds I tallied today driving around less than half the roads :

10 Blue-headed Vireos
5 (only) B-g Gnatcatchers
1 Black-thr Green Warbler
46 Yellow-thr Warblers
6 Pine Warblers
4 B&W Warblers
23 Louisianas

E Phoebes, E Towhees, Chipping Sparrows, and Brown Thrashers were all numerous and conspicuous. As far as migrants go, Golden-crowned Kinglets and Dark-eyed Juncos were both abundant. I only noted one Ruby-cr Kinglet. Although most have departed, several of many Red-headed Woodpeckers from the winter remain (possible nesters?).

Tree, Barn and N Rough-winged Swallows were present in small numbers at the Marina and Moore's Lane. Other birds along Moore's Lane included 2 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 10+ Wilson's Snipe, Killdeer, and many Blue-winged Teal.

A dozen or so Cliff Swallows have returned to the bridge over the Scioto River at Jasper (Pike County).
