I made a thorough trip around upper Hoover Reservoir yesterday morning, starting at Mudhen marsh and working around to Hoover Meadows, before finishing at the Sunbury causeway (with a brief stop at the dam on the way out).  Waterfowl were mostly going or gone, but recently arrived landbird migrants were few.  Notables included:

cormorants - small flocks everywhere, but about 60 had accumulated in Galena bay.  Many were in breeding plumage.

herons - a Black-cr.Night Heron and a Great Egret were both in the inlet at Area I

dabbling ducks - other than resident mallards, the only interesting ones left were Wood Duks prospecting for nests in many flooded woodlands and a few pairs of Blue-winged Teal at Hoover Meadows

diving ducks - a single scaup at Galena and a few Ruddies off Oxbow Island were about the sum total left

mergansers - small flocks of Red-br. mergs were around the upper reservoir, but at the Sunbury causeway you could watch small groups flying over, headed north

other waterfowl - a Common Loon was still loafing on the water foff the Sunbury causeway, while Oxbow had 1-2 Pied-billed Grebes

raptors - small numbers of Turkey Vultures everywhere, but little else

woodpeckers - 2 sapsuckers were in the woods at Char-Mar Preserve (next to Area I), but this species wasn't found in any other likely locations

swallows - Tree Swallows common at many stops, but still no Cliffs or Martins

blue-gray gnatcatcher - a single bird was singing along Big Walnut Creek at Area N

kinglets - lots of Golden-crowns, especially in the forest at Char-Mar preserve

Brown thrashers - 2 singing birds were dueling at Hoover Meadows

warblers - a few singing Yellow-rumps at scattered locations, but no early Prothonotaries yet

sparrows - few White-throats and no Tree Sparrows, but Chippies were singing in a lot of places, and a small flock of 5-6 had accumulated at the Sunbury causeway.  Singing Field Sparrows at many locations (and what a great sound for Spring).
