A reminder that cave swallows have been reported along the Gulf coast,
and in Georgia, the Carolinas, and Virginia over the past few days. In
what seems to be developing as a regular pattern, some birds of the SW
race pelodoma seem to advance along the Atlantic shore, and in several
recent Novembers have entered the St. Lawrence and ended up along Lake
Erie, with a number of Ohio records. Could be in the offing again.
Few other swallows are around at this time, and the superficially
look-alike cliff swallows are long gone. So it will pay to study the
salient field marks and keep eyes open along the Lakefront for swallows
with ocher-colored rumps. Please document them if you see any.
Best of luck,
Bill Whan
