John Szanto, Mike Bolton, and I had a Piping Plover in a shallow area at the
mouth of Crane Creek in the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge during a
shorebird survey today. Unfortunately, this area is closed to the public and
accessed by permit only but nonetheless, a good bird to report indeed. The bird
was not banded. Most likely the bird was gone within a few hours due to the
water rising.
We also had at least two Nelson’s Sharp-Tailed Sparrows and two LeConte’s
Sparrows not far from the ONWR platform off Stange Road near Krause. The
grassy area along the ditch was filled with sparrows. It was a good day to be
out birding! I posted photos on Toledo's Rarebird forum. (www.rarebird.org)
