The gulls began moving around 8:30 this morning and were still moving around
5:00 tonight at my house in North Perry, Lake County. The number of gulls
moving throughout the day remained remarkably constant. I occasionally
counted how many were moving per minute and the number ranged from 23- 360.
I figured throughout the day a good average would have been about 100 birds
per minute, or about 6,000 birds an hour. Figuring they were moving from
8:30am-5:00pm that is about 9 1/2 hours and about 57,000 gulls. I think
that number may be low as there were times that I wasn't counting that
several hundred birds were going by per minute.
I did not make any counts as I was not watching continuously but here are
my counts on some of the uncommon birds. This includes what I saw on my
waterbird survey.
Iceland gull- 1 adult
Thayer's gull- 1 1st winter
Lesser black-backed gull 17 (12 adults, 3 3rd year, and 2 1st year)
Glaucous gull- 4 (1 adult, 3 1st/2nd year)
Great black-backed gull- 300+
Of the common gulls, I think the ring-billed- herring gull ratio was about
15:1. the only Bonaparte's I saw were the 116 that passed by between 8:30
and 9:00.
There were decent numbers of waterfowl moving through the day. there were
lots of dabblers and good numbers of mergansers. I didn't see any more
scoters or anything uncommon.
There should be lots of gulls to look through at East 72nd.
