I just had a call from a group of birders from Holmes and Tuscarawas Counties. This morning they found the Mountain Bluebird and the Western Meadowlark with very little waiting and then headed south for the main goal of the trip - to look forSmith's Longspurs. As of 3:00 they had found one female and one male Smith's - everyone had good looks at the male. There were also flocks of 100 or more Lapland Longspurs in the area. The birders got permission to walk weedy cornfields (foxtails, etc) - the Smith's are not easy to flush and experience with both longspurs is important. The general location was northwest Mercer County (west of Rockford), but checking any likely fields along the Indiana border would be a good place to start.
