Hello,
I realized this morning that I didn't post the details of my Common Nighthawk report yesterday evening. That's what happens when you post from your phone after a couple of beers I guess. First of all, the sighting was at my house in Athens. My parents were visiting and we were all hanging out in the yard. I first heard the bird, but since their call sounds similar to American Woodcock, I wanted to visually confirm it. My parents, like many non-birders, are always amazed when I ID a bird by sound. I quickly located the bird and pointed it out to my folks-long pointed wings and white patches.
Nighthawks are pretty easy to see in Athens because of the many flat roofed university buildings. I have a lot of experience watching these birds feed. Once it passed over my yard, I didn't hear or see it again. This bird was on the move. I suspect that it was taking advantage of the strong southern winds and heading to points north. I don't keep records of arrival and departure like I should, but this birds seems to be pretty early. They don't seem to arrive, or maybe I don't notice them, until we have consistent warm nights. With the sudden change in temperature overnight, I hope that this bird survives the next couple of nights.
Good birding,Dan WeberAthens, Ohio
