A few stops in the day yielded the expected migrants, but it was the later birding that made me pause. First, while running evening errands in Gahanna, I noted a flock of 100-120 Chimney Swifts circling the high school chimney. This is actually less than half the number I had here 6 days ago, but is still a noteworthy Spring roost. The unpredicatble weather of the past several weeks appears to have forced Swifts to stay in large communal roosts rather than split up into breeding pairs.

Later in the evening, I took advantage of the unseasonably warm weather to run a frog survey (part of a long-running program sponsored by ODW). As the night deepened, I was startled by a large volume of overhead calls from migrants. For most of the time I was out (and traffic noise didn't interfere), I estimated 2-4 calls /minute. This is a large migrant passage nowadays, and bodes well for migrant traps tomorrow morning. Most appeared to be warblers, buntings, and sparrows. Certainly, we should see a big change-over in the numbers and types of migrants that we've had for the past 7 days.
