On Saturday, May 15, teams of birders scoured the Bobolink area (12 counties, centering around Wayne and Holmes),  finding a total of 183 species. Perhaps most impressive were the two teams of bikers who reached 154 and 152 species, the former breaking the record set last year by one. The top motorized team only managed 156!
While there were no mega-rarities, birders did find Clay-colored Sparrow, Blue Grosbeak, several Lark Sparrows, multiple Summer Tanagers, Dickcissels, Sedge and Winter Wrens, and a good assortment of raptors, shorebirds and warblers. Ducks were scarce.
We gathered on Monday evening at an Amish meeting place to share results, stories and food. I didn't think about until I got home that I may have been the only "English" person there. Maybe some of you will join us next year. Robert Hershberger, owner of Time and Optics, sponsors the event.
