Our CBC is on Sunday so I took a drive around to see how much open water we
have left around South Bass Island for waterfowl. There was only one small
patch of open water on Chapman's Reef on the east side of Perry's Victory.
There were about fifty Tundra Swans there along with Canada Geese and
Mallards. Two other patches on open water on the east side of the island
yielded more Tundra Swans, about 30 common goldeneye, a few mallards, and a
single double-crested cormorant. With the temperatures expected the next two
nights, it could be a very different count this year!
