The birding has picked up again the last few days in eastern Mahoning Co.  On 3/29, a check on the Lowellville great horned owl nest found one owlet with the adult.  It was decent-sized already, so must have hatched a while ago.  Some cedar waxwings were also in Lowellville.  In Poland Twp. the last couple days were Wilson's snipe, pileated woodpeckers, horned lark, and a singing fox sparrow.  In Coitsville Twp. I searched some fields today and found Am. kestrel, Wilson's snipe, 5 Am. pipits (FOS), and 5 e. meadowlarks.  Also today, I visited Evans L. and nearby Pine L.  There were 1000+ ducks on these two lakes, plus other waterbirds.  The highlight was an imm. RED-THROATED LOON on Pine L.  This is the third one there this month!  Evans L./Pine L. tally today:  wood ducks, Am. black ducks, 2 blue-winged teal (FOS, finally), redheads, 230 ring-necked ducks, 5 greater scaup, lesser scaups, 23 buffleheads, 33 hooded mergansers, 415 red-breasted
mergansers, 285 ruddy ducks, 12 wild turkeys, 1 red-throated loon, 15 common loons, pied-billed grebe, 28 horned grebes (2 seen courting -- very cool indeed!), double-crested cormorants, 65 Am. coots, Bonaparte's gulls, herring gulls, belted kingfisher, e. phoebe, tree swallows, e. bluebirds, n. mockingbird, and dark-eyed juncos.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
