House Wrens... On 3 Acres of land, I have 15 nest boxes throughout the yard here. Of those 15 nest boxes currently House wrens are either raising young or sitting on eggs in 6 off the boxes.  Although I like House wrens It bothers me that in 2 of the boxes the wrens had built nests over the top of bluebird nests. One contained 3 eggs the other a complete nest abandoned because of a persistent house wren fighting for territory and winning out. I have not intervened in any way letting nature take its course, but have wanted to desperately.

The Blue birds fighting for box space currently have successfully fledged 5 young from a previous box and have taken up residence in its 3rd 2nd attempt box of the season for which the female has 5 eggs in and just started sitting on them as of yesterday. It seems the successfully fledged young from the first box are helping out with the 2nd box attempt and Dad with kids are keeping close tabs on this 3rd box 2nd attempt.

Other Box nesters of note currently are 1 pair of House sparrows, which took  every last ounce of my will to keep from ousting  which should be fledgling as early as tomorrow.

Moved on and fledged have already been 2 House wren families and their young, 1 brood of chickadees, the already mentioned Bluebirds above,  and a first for me 4 Red Squirrel youngins which were the earliest to come nest and leave...

Every year I have seen an Increase in House wrens and worry that there added pressure will move my now 3rd year resident bluebirds along. they have successfully already thwarted 2 other pairs of bluebirds from moving in. but have nested nearby as they bring their young along with the resident birds when I whistle and replenish the meal worms for them which is early morning and early evening.

Now that you mention it I heard one in my yard during migration but don't
have my usual summer resident.

Subject: [Ohio-birds] House wrens

I heard from a fellow who lives in NW Columbus, and for years has
relished the presence of house wrens, that for the first time there are
none in his area. I told him birds don't live forever, but he insisted
he was missing more than a few pairs. I really haven't noticed a dearth
of house wrens, but I promised to find out if others have. He knows we
weren't talking about Carolina wrens. Has anyone else with years of
experience missed hearing or seeing house wrens this summer? I'll let
him know what you may have to say. No need to respond to the list.
Thanks,
Bill Whan
