June had the fewest additions to the 2011 Franklin County list thus
far--only three species (Henslow’s sparrow, dickcissel, little blue
heron)--but our total is now a very respectable 240.
We haven’t missed any species for which we had good chances in the last
half of the year, and have found five unexpected rare ones. In fall
(July-September), we have reason to hope for quite a few migrant
shorebirds, maybe some wandering gulls and terns, white pelicans, sedge
wrens, a couple of sparrows, and one hopes some of the many rare
wanderers autumn migration and weird weather can bring. As this
want-list confirms, birds of wetlands will be a priority, just as
wetlands themselves are. Still, there are plenty of real but rarer
possibilities in drier situations--western kingbirds, scissor-tailed
flycatchers, Mississippi kites, etc. Franklin County has 332 species on
its checklist, after all.
An updated version of our list will be on the Columbus Audubon site at
http://www.columbusaudubon.org/production/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=675&Itemid=216
soon; if you don't find it, write to me and I'll mail you a file.
Thanks to all who've sought and reported birds here thus far,
Bill Whan
Columbus
