While in the Marietta area visiting a constuction job site, I had the opportunity to visit a different to me, interesting birding location tonight, The Kroger Wetlands, from 6:15PM to 7:15PM. While walking the one mile loop trail, plus a side spur trail, I recorded 17 species of birds, the highlight being two adult Black-crowned Night-Herons. This wetland is located near the confluence of the Ohio River and Duck Creek. The Night-Herons were on the side of the pool by the white martin house, best viewed by taking the loop counter-clockwise. Other bird species seen were: Canada Goose, Great Blue Heron, Green Heron, Common Nighthawk, Chimney Swift, Belted Kingfisher, White-eyed Vireo, Barn Swallow, Carolina Chickadee, Carolina Wren, House Wren, Gray Catbird, Cedar Waxwing, Eastern Towhee, Song Sparrow, and American Goldfinch. Presently, there are some remarkable and extensive groupings of Swamp Globe Mallow in bloom for those who love wildflowers. The Kroger Wetlands is a 20 acre wetland just west of I-77 Exit 1 (toward downtown Marietta off of SR7). Go to the first traffic light (Acme Street), and go right a short distance behind the Kroger Grocery Store, to a designated parking area on the right. A kiosk with a map is there.
