Late day visit before sunset on my way home from seeing the Eared Grebe
near Fostoria. Shorebird habitat in the swale north of SR194 at CH115
(north entrance road to KPWA) and in northeast corner at CH71 and TH108
(ponds at white barn). In the swale: Greater Yellowlegs 1, Pectoral
Sandpiper 50, Golden Plover 2 heard calling but not seen, lots of Killdeer,
Lapland Longspur flock of 100 (estimate), many males in or approaching
breeding plumage. At white barn ponds: Greater Yellowlegs 5, Lesser
Yellowlegs 2, Pectoral Sandpiper 25, Dunlin 10, Wilson's Snipe 6, Golden
Plover 7, seen flying and calling. Vesper Sparrow 3 on CH70 near east end
south of road in field in front of woods. Two males singing, fighting over
placid female on the ground, a territorial battle. American Pipit, flock
of 100 (est) on TH103 north of CH71. Also my first two Barn Swallows.
