Around 12:30 I spotted an odd flycatcher in a field in the park south of my
house in North Perry. The field was mowed earlier this week and there is a
lot of sticks and other things sticking up. I noticed a largish pale
flycatcher feeding out in the field. the bird was perching on the broken
off stems and was landing a foot or two off the ground. It got my attention
since there were no flycatchers hanging around my yard this summer other
than great crested and pewee. As stated before, the flycatcher seemed to be
on the large empidonax size range. It was fairly pale with a grayish back
and whitish underparts. The tail was fairly long and the wings appeared
short giving it a slender appearance. The wings were dark with pale
wingbars. It did have a complete, but indistinct eye ring. The bill
appeared long and slender for a flycatcher. I was unable to see the
underside of the bill as it perched low the whole time. The distinct thing
about it was the movement of its tail. When it landed it slowly bobbed its
tail downward like a phoebe. It did not show any movement with its
wings.
I watched it feeding and as people walked by it slowly moved
further into
the field and slowly to the east. When I tried to follow it it
flew across
the driveway into some thicker brush. I was able to observe it
from a
distance, but when a couple walked by with their dog it flew further
east.
It appeared to fly into the lower branches of a maple. When I got a
little
closer I was unable to locate it. I scanned the area for a while
from a
distance before moving in closer. I was unable to locate the bird.
I have
searched the area for about an hour and a half with no further
sightings.
When the bird first appeared it was in the southern end of the
field west of
my drive. It is the only field at the park that has been
brush-hogged. It
was as close as 15 feet away when I first observed it.
Unfortunately there
is a lot of people walking today and it flew off into
the field further. I
had my camera I use for macro photography with me and
once I knew what it
was I couldn't get the camera ready quick enough for a
photo. Once it
crossed east across the drive it remained partially
obscured. It was last
observed at the east end of that
field.
Lakeshore Reservation is located at the intersection of Lockwood
Road and
Antioch Road in North Perry. If you want to try your luck take
Route 20 to
Antioch Road and then drive north to the park. Once in the park
go to the
east parking lot and walk the trails west. It could even be north
of the
east parking lot. There are some brushy areas there. I've checked
without
any luck.
There has been a lot of small bird migration over
the last couple days. I
have seen numerous yellow warblers, orchard and
Baltimore orioles, and a
Canada warbler. Yesterday I had a migrant eastern
phoebe. When I first
saw this bird I thought phoebe. After looking at its
shape and color it was
apparent that it was something different.
