I went back to Big Island and bushwacked closer to the duck. On closer observation I believe it is a barnyard variety.

I thought it looked like the common eiders I saw in Northern Ireland 6 weeks ago, but realize that this would be very unusual. In the distant scope view I thought I saw a black cap, black belly, and orangish breast. Could this possibly have been a common eider? A barnyard duck? If anyone else sees this duck I would appreciate an opinion.
