Interesting to note as I sit in the recliner trying to get relief for my back, the following records:

"The Birds of Ohio" by William Dawson (1903) lists the Great Gray as " very rare" in Ohio, and includes an account of a Great Gray Owl shot (but not collected) by Charles Dury of Cincinnati in Clark County in the 1870s.  Dawson states that at the time there were "two or three records believed to be authentic, but no specimens."

The old standby reference that I've been using since 1972, "Birds of the Cleveland Region" edited by Arthur Williams and published by CMNH (1950), lists it as a "rare and accidental visitor" and references John Kirkpatrick (1819-1869) adding the bird to the Ohio list "in consequence of an owl answering the description of this species, having been shot some years ago at Huntsburgh, Geauga County."
