This afternoon I checked Areas L, M, and N ofthe Hoover Nature Preserve in hopes I might find my FOS Prothonotary Warbler. The eBird Maps indicate reports of PROWs as close as the Cincinnati area so it will notbe long before I hear “Sweet, Sweet, Sweet, Sweet” and declare it to be Spring. No luck today, but soon. I visited Area L (Dustin Road), Area M (Boardwalk) andArea N (the wetland forest just south of Front Street in Galena). In spite of abrisk, chilly wind, activity was fairly constant and added 5 FOS species to myyear list.

Highlights at Area L include high numbers ofboth Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Great Egrets and a Pileated Woodpecker.

Highlights at Area M include both an adultand an immature Bald Eagle, 3 Osprey, Caspian Terns on the boardwalk rail mixedin with the Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, a Yellow-throated Warbler, EasternPhoebes and Common Loon.

Highlights at Area N include Blue-wingedTeal, Red-headed Woodpecker (5), Pileated Woodpecker, Brown Creeper,Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Yellow-rumpedWarbler (30+) and Yellow-throated Warbler.
