This morning Linda and I walked the trails at SharonWoods Metro Park (Franklin County). The wooded areas were quieter than Iexpected and the best activity was in the areas bordering Schrock Lake. When wedid find activity it was a flurry of everything, everywhere at once. The lakeitself was mostly empty except for Canada Geese and Mallards, but tucked alongthe shore we did find a Pied-billed Grebe, several Wood Ducks, Blue-winged Tealand a Belted Kingfisher. Several Ring-necked Ducks were sleeping at mid lake.

The trees and shrubs along the lake’s edge were best, yielding several of the most cooperative Blue-headed Vireos I have ever runinto. They practically came up to us. Joining them were many Yellow-rumpedWarblers, several Yellow, Yellow-throated and Palm Warblers, and a loneBlack-throated Green Warbler. We found two late Fox Sparrows scrubbing about inthe underbrush. Eastern Phoebe were near the bridges along the trails andseveral Great Crested Flycatchers were calling from their tree top perches. TheGolden-crowned Kinglets are dwindling in numbers but the Ruby-crowned Kingletsseemed to be everywhere in the park.

After a break for lunch we checked a few areas at theHoover Nature Preserve (Delaware County). With a scheduled program forProthonotary Warblers this weekend I want to keep tabs on their arrival at thepreserve. We located them at both Dustin Road and Area N along with ourneighbors who were already there enjoying them. Northern Parula are back and welocated several males working the Sycamore Trees and singing away. The Ospreyare easy to watch from the Area M Boardwalk and Caspian Terns were mixed inwith the Ring-billed Gulls on the boardwalk railing. Red-headed Woodpeckerswere observed from the old road in Area N.
