A number of observers have commented on the various presences and
numbers of pine siskins this spring, and have asked for explanations. I,
and probably others, wrote to some of these folks to offer some
information on this interesting topic.
        I felt I ought to say that good questions like these are probably not
best posed on this list, if you're really hoping for an answer. A lot of
this kind of information is, however, readily available on the Web, and
findable with a simple google-type search. Even better for folks who
want to know more about Ohio's birds would be a copy of Peterjohn's "The
Birds of Ohio." This 600+-pg book costs only about $20, and conveys a
wealth of knowledge about just the sorts of topics intelligent birders
wonder about. It offers, for example, a comprehensive treatment of the
migration and nesting schedules of siskins, their variability in numbers
and departure dates, etc. It represents a distillation of the knowledge
of many observers over the years, and has many good answers for these
and many other good questions.
