Dear Ohio birders,

On Friday 4/5 I heard a meadowlark sing once that I suspected may be a possible Western Meadowlark in the fields surrounding the Lodge Pond at Fernald Preserve in extreme western Hamilton county. In my e-bird report I indicated Eastern/Western Meadowlark with the stipulation in my notes that further investigation is required. I posted this report on http://www.cincinnatibirds.com. The e-bird report can be viewed here: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S13641251 . Since my observation, others have been able to get to Fernald and their observations indicate that this bird may indeed be a Western, but I still think further observation and documentation is needed. The other observers have been finding the bird away from the Lodge Pond fields, further up the access road in the first pond past the bend in the road before you get to the visitor center. Unfortunately, my schedule will not enable me to get back to Fernald until at least Friday of this
week. I'm glad others are still trying to confirm this identification. I left the bird unidentified based on a single, heard only song.

Good luck to anyone who pursues this bird and tries to get further documentation. Western Meadowlark would be very rare to accidental in the Cincinnati area. (There are only two southern Ohio records in Ned Keller's database at http://cincinnatibirds.com/database/report.php). The only one I've ever seen and heard was in May 1990 at Maumee Bay State Park near Toledo, OH.
