At about 10AM, this morning, Friday, ten patient birders were rewarded with a single Whimbrel, spotted by Sue from Dayton, landing fairly close-by. A brief moment later it took flight, and moved to the peninsula by the entrance bay, by a juvenile Bald Eagle. After another very brief period, up and away over the breakwall, heading west along the Lake Erie shoreline. Bobby Greene documented the excitement with one of his usual excellent photos. A new high tally of Bald Eagles this morning was 46. Some of the other highlights were 2 Ruddy Turnstones, 5 Semipalmated Plovers, 3 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 1 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Least Sandpiper, 4 Sanderlings, 6 Bonaparte's Gulls, and an Osprey. Hundreds of Bank Swallows were literally on The Sandspit doing who knows what.
