Unsurprisingly, ice is breaking up in the Great Lakes, and the history
of our big red-necked grebe invasion may be settling in terms of numbers
and locations, but not explanations.
I apologize for a useless link to Alan Wormington's thoughtful
observations on movements on Lake Erie, and I'd like to add some useful
remarks by Carolina birders that have appeared since. Go to the ABA's
compendium of state birding sites at http://birding.aba.org/ , check
out Alan's contribution to the Ontario site on Hillman Marsh on 3/7,
then follow posts to the North and South Carolina list for more recent
ones, with different perspectives including the Atlantic Ocean.
I'm sure there are plenty of Ohio birders interested in issues larger
than their lists, and this is interesting stuff. And a tip of the hat to
the fellow who wondered why I was so surprised there are more red-necks
in Tennessee than in Ohio...
