I had a few free mornings and checked several areas along the Scioto River around Dublin, around O'Shaughnessy Dam (including Twin Lakes & Traphagen Preserves) yesterday, and further south to Kozcuiscko Park, Scioto Park, & Kiwanis today. Water level here is high but dropping, but still had little in the way of waders or shorebirds. Interesting birds included
Green Heron - at least 1 was at Twin Lakes, flushed from the shore by a fisherman.
Cooper's Hawk - an adult was attending a begging juvenile at Coventry Woods, just west of Scioto Park
Turkey Vultures - at least 36 were roosting in areas below O'Shaughnessy dam in Frink Park; 8 more were up by Home Rd.
Barred Owl - at least 1 juvenile was calling in the woods at Traphagen, where adults have raised broods in prior years.
Willow Flycatchers - a few birds are still hanging on in overgrown meadows at Twin Lakes and Area K on the reservoir
E.Kingbirds - adults with juveniles were at several spots on both days, possibly starting to wander south
Vireos - Red-eyed & Warbling widespread, but also had Yellow-throated (at Twin Lakes) and White-eyed (at Kozcuiscko)
Cliff Swallows - colonies at O'Shaugnessy Dam (60 nests) and Home Rd bridge (25 nests) are starting to drop fledglings.
Gnatcatchers - unusually widespread, with adults feeding juveniles at many spots. They've had a great summer here so far.
Yellow-throated Warblers - singers still common along the river, with individuals at Frink Park, Scioto Park, & Kiwanis
