Subject: Looking for waterbird data from the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair

The Great Lakes Commission (GLC) is looking for boat or aerial survey data for waterbirds from the open waters of the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair. The GLC is partnering with avian experts to develop predictive distribution and relative abundance models for waterbirds in open water areas, to hopefully understand habitat or environmental predictors of distribution/abundance and provide useful products for management/spatial planning in the open waters of the Great Lakes. Unfortunately, they cannot incorporate certain types of population monitoring data (such as land-based counts on lake shorelines or aerial colony counts) into their modeling effort at present; rather, they really need transect surveys conducted on the water. They are most interested in data collected since 2000; although, if someone has a dataset that fits the above description but is from an earlier period, they still would very much like to know about and potentially use them.

Attached is the template for data collection that we developed during our survey work. It may also help give an idea of the type of data we need. Ultimately, however, we are interested in all relevant data regardless of the format or completeness of the data.

Data Collection Template

At the moment, they are merely hoping to assess the amount of existing data for the region, but they would also like to know if you might be willing to share your data for a future modeling effort. The model developers would, of course, develop specific permissions regarding use of the data, and would not share or use the data for any other purpose without your permission.
