A very, very long overdue and exciting day on the Lake Erie shore, with blasting WSW winds and intermittent precip-carrying fronts. Here's a short summary of highlights from Erie County east to Lake County, on the immediate shoreline.
Huron pier and rivermouth scored no less then 22 FRANKLIN'S GULLS and a LAUGHING GULL, per Kent Miller and many observers. A RED-THROATED LOON was found offshore Sherod Park, by Dan Gesualdo. An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN on the south side of the Huron River causeway was reported by Doreene Linzell and Dan Sanders.
Helen Taft and Sandy Brown had at least 13 FRANKLIN'S GULLS on the Black River in Lorain, just south of the Route 6 bridge.
Four BLACK SCOTERS were just offshore Cahoon Park (immediately east of Huntington Reservation) in Bay Village, Cuyahoga County.
I had two PACIFIC LOONS off Lakewood Park in Lakewood (just west of CLE). Found the first bird on the water just offshore, which picked up after 25 minutes, headed east. Twenty minutes later, a second Pacific Loon passed from west to east. Chuck Slusarczyk and I had 7 FRANKLIN'S GULLS from Lakewood Park.
Chuck had 10 FRANKLIN'S GULLS at first light on the beach at Edgewater Park (Cleveland), and later, he and Tim Jasinki, Carlton Schooley and Vera Hurst had many more pass by them at Edgewater and Wendy Park (15 and 29).
Jerry Talkington had a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE come in off the lake at Fairport Harbor. The bird made it to shore, but lifted off very shortly after and was chased down and killed by a Herring Gull. Jerry had a 1st year BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE pass through Fairport Harbor, headed west, plus a total of 30 FRANKLIN'S GULLS.
John Pogacnik reported TWO 1st year BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES moving past North Perry in Lake County. Plus an Eared Grebe.
Common Loons, Horned Grebes and Bonaparte's Gulls continue to stage at most of these locations in excellent numbers. Red-breasted Merganser numbers are building. Waterfowl numbers and diversity are starting to rise. Tundra Swans staged a push today.
