breakfast,and the Ross's Goose was up on the lawn, close to the river.
Seems to like where it is, so it will be interesting to see how long it
hangs around...

Tonight's show went off right on schedule as the American Woodcocks in the field by the house started calling at about 7:45 PM and continued until about 8:10 PM. I got out by the field ahead of their times from yesterday to position myself for better views and was nicely rewarded. When they first began sounding off I honed in on the sound and watch three different males strut and call in small openings in the grass. Then they began their courting flights and circular descents the length of the field with likely 8 to 10 birds displaying. One male alit in the shorter grass behind me and realizing I was there immediately lit out for the higher grass of the wetland in the field. 

The property was once pasture owned by a veterinarian who treated large animals. With the history of pasture and the wetland and its brush the habitat is ideal for woodcocks.
