This morning I headed north to visit the L. Erie shore. Along the way I saw 40 double-crested cormorants overhead, Am. kestrel, and e. meadowlark in southern Ashtabula Co. Conneaut harbor was decent, but very cold w/the stiff north wind again. Birds there included 8 buffleheads, 50 red-breasted mergansers, 80 d-c cormorants, black-crowned night-heron, bald eagle, 200 Bonaparte's gulls, 5 great black-backed gulls, Caspian tern, belted kingfisher, and n. flicker. Next I hit Lake Shore Park in Ashtabula. It was pretty slow there, best birds were red-breasted mergansers, 45 d-c cormorants, Bonaparte's gulls, and 3 Caspian terns. I checked the small lake next to the Ashtabula Mall, and had good luck there again with tundra swan, ring-necked ducks, lesser scaups, buffleheads, 6 pied-billed grebes, Am. coots, and a tree swallow present. Then I went down to Orwell Marsh. It held 4 blue-winged teal, 21 green-winged teal, 3 hooded mergansers, 12
greater yellowlegs, belted kingfisher, and tree swallows. Finally, I left Ashtabula Co. and visited Mosquito L/WA. More good birding here: gadwalls, 45 Am. wigeon, blue-winged and green-winged teals, lesser scaup, buffleheads, red-breasted mergansers, d-c cormorants, a light rough-legged hawk, Am. kestrel, 50 Am. coots, 3 Wilson's snipe, 8 Bonaparte's gulls, tree swallows, and a few (heard only) rusty blackbirds. Later, Craig
