The Columbus Audubon trip to the Darby & PrairieOaks wetlands could not relocate the Little Blue Herons this morning, nor could any of the other birders we ran into. We spent time at the northern-most wetlands (north wetlands), the central wetlands by Kuhlwein road (the Kuhlwein wetlands), and the south wetlands around the bison silos (the silo wetlands).  What were present were quite a few Great Egrets:  the north pool had 1, while the pools down by the bison silos had a whopping 12. Despite the heat shimmer, their yellowish beaks and ultra-long necks were very apparent.  Also present were Common Moorhens (calling in both the north and Kuhwein wetlands), Blue-winged Teal (small #s in every wetland), Pied-billed grebes, Virginia Rail (both north & Kuhlwein wetlands), and Sora (north wetland).  The grass has grown quite a bit on the Kuhlwein and silo wetlands, so that it's difficult to see much of the open water.   Prairie Oaks had fewer waterbirds; Darby Bend Lakes were mostly birdless except for some geese and 2 cormorants.  Both locations had displaying pairs of Spotted Sandpipers, so these perky little sandpipers seem to be becoming more common.
