Linda and I checked the open water area of Hoover Reservoir for the
Long-tailed Duck. No luck this trip. There were many fresh prints in the snow
where people had gone down by the water near where the bird had been. I expect
it was spooked from the area by this. There was waterfowl at several areas
with open water including the spillway below the dam, the creek below the
dam, Walnut Launch Ramp and Oxbow Road. Oxbow had the most activity both in
numbers and variety.
Species observed include:
Canada Geese - several thousand
Mallard - 100+
American Black Duck - 50+
American Wigeon - 27
Northern Shoveler - 75-80
Redhead - 3
Ring-necked Duck - 2
Bufflehead - 1
Hooded Merganser - 100+
Ruddy Duck - 10
On the Christmas Bird Count day and week for the Hoover Reservoir circle we
didn't have a single Ring-necked Duck and only 1 Redhead. Add the
Ring-neck and yesterday's Long-tailed Duck and that's two new species to pop up
since the count. I have one last report to receive and I will be able to post
the results for the circle.
