Since the current thread of the list is a first this - first that, I have
what may be a state-wide first. Yesterday, I noticed an adult female house
finch in my forsythia bush that was acting kind of tame. I didn't
think much about it at the time.
Today, 4/24, I checked out the forsythia and found a FFFFFHF: translation
"Frizzy Feathered First Fledgling House Finch". It didn't seem to want to
fly, only hop about the bush so I am assuming this is the object of the
attention of the adult finch yesterday.
This is by far the earliest I have ever found a fringillid fledgling, maybe
even a passiform except for horned larks at least at this latitude.
Has anyone else had fledged House Finches this year yet?
