I made a big loop today towards Akron and back. I got a look at 8 different lakes; at each one, it was a similar story--99% ice, 1% water. That 1% held plenty of waterfowl and gulls, though. Started at Summit L. in Akron, here were: canvasback, ring-necked ducks, buffleheads, c. goldeneyes, hooded mergansers, ruddy duck, RED-NECKED GREBE, Am. coots, ring-billed gulls, herring gulls, and a puzzling first-cycle gull which appeared to be some sort of herring X great black-backed mix. Next stop was Springfield L., it was still too frozen to attract much. On to Wingfoot L., which had Am. wigeon, 55 ring-necked ducks, lesser scaup, bufflehead, great blue heron, and Am. tree sparrow. Yes, there were ring-billed and herring gulls here too. They were at every lake today. Next up was Mogadore Res., it had ring-necked ducks, hooded mergansers, common mergansers, and 2 adult bald eagles. L. Hodgson in Ravenna lacked fowl, but a turkey vulture and a
Cooper's hawk were in the area. At West Branch SP were a tundra swan, redheads, ring-necked ducks, and bufflehead. On to L. Milton, where most of the ducks and gulls were WAY out there, even with a scope. Jammed into and around open water holes were many mallards, Am. black ducks, canvasbacks, redheads, ring-necked ducks, c. goldeneyes, and a great blue heron. It was good to hear a n. flicker calling here. I only had time for a quick look at the Rte. 224 causeway area of Berlin Res.; too much ice there, with few birds. Several days with highs in the 50's will likely melt a LOT of the thin ice I saw today, especially if it rains as predicted. Finally, back around home in Poland Twp. I was pleased to see a male ring-necked pheasant and 50 wild turkeys (one very impressive displaying tom) today. Later, Craig
