Thank you to everyone who responded!
I think immature grosbeak... See the following link and the picture where
they are holding up the bird's wing to show the red underwing; that looks
the most like the bird I saw.

Subject: [Ohio-birds] Help with bird ID
Have a bird in the backyard I can't find in the books or through
Whatbird.com. It's between size of a Robin and Blue Jay, with distinct black
and white striping on the head. The beak is finch-like. When it flies, I can
see strong reddish brown patches that aren't visible when the wings are
closed.
It's been coming to the feeder and I have the camera at the ready in case he
shows up again.
