Today I spent dawn to early afternoon atlasing in blocks near Jefferson, Lenox, and New Lyme in the middle of Ashtabula Co.  Birds seen/heard included: wood duck w/young, wild turkeys, green heron, imm. bald eagle, Am. kestrels, ruby-throated hummingbirds, pileated woodpecker, alder flycatcher, e. kingbirds, horned lark, e. bluebirds, veeries, blue-winged warblers, chestnut-sided warbler, Am. redstarts, ovenbirds, hooded warbler, scarlet tanagers, savannah sparrows, swamp sparrows, indigo buntings, bobolinks, e. meadowlarks, and purple finch.  In the afternoon I checked Conneaut harbor; L. Erie water level was down a hair, so a little more shorebird habitat was exposed than last time I visited in early June.  Highlights there were a white-rumped sandpiper (very late) and a dunlin (either very late, summering along L. Erie, or a failed breeder??).  Both were adults in alt. plumage.  Also at Conneaut were an imm. Bonaparte's gull, an imm. great
black-backed gull, 2 Caspian terns, a couple imm. bald eagles, purple martins, and bank swallows.  In the city limits I heard hooded warbler and purple finch, good additions to that atlas block.  In the south end of Conneaut Twp. a cerulean warbler was singing from a traditional spot, where Center Rd. crosses Conneaut Creek.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
