Hi,

15 years ago was back when Vic owned the list and actively moderating it to
stay within the allowed subjects. The discussion could be pretty wide
ranging as it related to wild birds including habitat and conservation and
or birding in Ohio and the immediately adjacent contiguous geography. From
my perspective it was more oriented toward general ornithology, and
sometimes acceptable discussions got pretty wide ranging and very
interesting. The sorts of thing that draws complaints and hate mail today.

Today the list is mostly about reporting sightings and has little lively
discussion about habitat or ecology. Most of the fun has been sucked out of
it by those with commercial interests, and those afraid of critical posts
perhaps having an adverse effect on fundraising efforts.

As a result of the above you seldom or never see much that involves
discussion of any topic that might be controversial, and when there is the
responses tend to be thin skinned.

Those are my observations based upon 20 years or so of being a subscriber
and contributor.

Haans
